The Maladaptive Daydreamer Self-Monitoring Log and Journal

New Resource from ISMD:
Self-Monitoring Log and Journal for Maladaptive Daydreaming

The International Society for Maladaptive Daydreaming is pleased to announce the launch of a new free resource for the MD community: the ISMD Self-Monitoring Log and Journal.

This unique, guided tool is created to help individuals living with Maladaptive Daydreaming gain insight, monitor patterns, and build a more mindful connection to the present.

Why This Resource Matters

Maladaptive Daydreaming can be isolating and hard to manage. But tracking your daydreaming patterns and reflecting through journaling can be powerful tools for change.
Research shows that simply becoming more aware of your daydreaming habits can reduce their frequency and intensity. Journaling, in turn, helps you process emotions, recognize triggers, and reconnect with your needs.

What’s Inside?

The ISMD Self-Monitoring Log and Journal is organised into three comprehensive chapters:

  • Chapter 1: Self-Monitoring Log
A practical tool for recording the timing, duration, triggers, and emotional tone of your daydreams. Includes useful tools such as a feelings wheel and a guide to common MD themes.
  • Chapter 2: Reflective Journal Prompts
Thoughtfully designed prompts to help you explore the reasons behind your daydreams. Topics include emotional patterns, unmet needs, effects on daily life, and visualising positive change.
  • Chapter 3: Mindfulness Exercises
Grounding, breathing, and body scan practices to help refocus your attention on the present when daydreaming becomes overwhelming or intrusive.

A Companion on Your Healing Journey

Whether you’re just starting to explore your daydreaming patterns or aiming to deepen your understanding, this log and journal is your caring companion. You don’t need to be a writer—short notes and sincere reflections are sufficient. Every small insight is a step forward.

We believe the most powerful insights come from shared experience. As you begin your journey with this journal, we would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Please share your reflections in the comments on our social media posts.

Your voice is a valuable part of this community, and we look forward to hearing what you discover.

A huge thank you to the three volunteers who created and developed this downloadable material:
