A Farewell, a Merger, and a Hopeful 2026

By Prof. Eli Somer

The International Consortium for Maladaptive Daydreaming Research will be merging its website with that of the International Society for Maladaptive Daydreaming in 2026. As part of this transition, the ICMDR’s core resources, publications, and community materials will be integrated into the ISMD platform, creating a single, more robust home for our growing field. This consolidation reflects how far MD research has come in a remarkably short time and how much more we can achieve when our efforts are unified.

As I write these lines, the twenty-eighth and final issue of the ICMDR newsletter is being prepared for distribution. Over the past four years, this newsletter has chronicled new studies, emerging voices, and the early shaping of a scientific community that did not exist a decade ago. Editing it and serving as the ICMDR’s content webmaster has been a privilege. It has also been a reminder that progress in a young field depends on curiosity, generosity, and the willingness to contribute even when recognition is still uncertain.

The transition ahead marks an ending, but it also marks a beginning. The ISMD’s dedicated volunteers are ready to carry the work forward, and I am confident the society will build something even stronger. My hope is that the merged platform becomes a hub where researchers, clinicians, and daydreamers can find reliable knowledge, feel less alone, and see a path toward better understanding and better care.

Thank you to everyone who read, shared, or contributed to the ICMDR newsletter over the years. Your engagement has helped turn an overlooked phenomenon into an international research effort. May the coming year bring continued collaboration, new discoveries, and a spirit of openness that allows this field to flourish.

Wishing you a warm Hanukah, a joyful Christmas, and a happy, healthy 2026.
